HHS Annual Bus Trip, 2008
Another great trip is planned for our members
and friends(who should be members of a society)for Thursday,
July 24.
The bus will be leaving at 8:15 A.M. from
the parking lot behind the post office in Caledonia, as usual,
and returning at 6:30 P.M.
The cost is $58.00 per person.
Please call Roz Rumball at (905) 768-3025
to book a seat as soon as possible. Please pay by July 10
at the latest. Cancellations after this time might be charged
a fee. You can mail your cheque to Box 2078, Caledonia, ON,
N3W2G6.
The following is the itinerary:
Flower Hill Farms on Safari Rd., owned
by John and Helen Hill. They have been guest speakers at our
society. They have reasonably priced, healthy, hardy perennials
and grasses . Prices include taxes. John will explain the
wind trickle irrigation system to those who are interested.
A composting toilet is for use on sight!
The Country Squires Garden on Derry Rd West - owned by Keith
Squires and his wife. The plants are arranged according to
sun or shade and height. Signs help the buyer to locate these
and the pots are colour-coded re price and size of pot. Price
does not include tax. A couple of scree gardens are on the
rather run down looking property ,but don’t be fooled
as they have the goods-unusual plants.
Christina and Barry Scutt on 10 Christina Dr. This beautiful
garden of mixed perennials is on the Guelph garden tour. It
can best be described as a rambling cottage garden with grass
paths through the trees some of which are walnut. Two ponds
and many garden ornaments, some made by Barry as he was a
sign painter adorn the landscape. He grows 800-1000 annuals
from seed and Christina plants them. Too bad the inside is
not on the tour as they have incredible plants.
The Enabling Garden in Riverside Park is only 3 years old
and was featured in the recent Ontario Gardner magazine. Raised
gardens enable people with disabilities to garden in a beautiful
riverside environment. City gardens also include a flower
clock and waterfall.
Wendy Lewis-15 Glenholme Dr. This stunning ½ acre
is also on the garden tour. Wendy’s interior design
shop is part of her home. This influence can be seen in her
garden as it is a venue for weddings. She has mainly non-shade
, drought-tolerant plants. Some of these will be for sale.
She also designs gardens for people. Her garden has been on
The Gardener’s Journal by Kathy Renwald.
Lunch at Springfield Golf and Country Club.2054
Gordon St(old Hwy 6).
Choices:
1. veal parmesan on a bun , roasted potatoes, Caesar salad
2. beef on a bun, garden salad, French fries
3. vegetarian stir fry, salad
4. tomato pasta,salad.
All include dessert, tea or coffee.
University of Guelph Arboretum-off College Ave. E. members
can walk the trails at their own pace while visiting these
gardens: Japanese, rose, Italian, English, native trees of
Ontario or just sit and relax.
Picard Peanuts-Morriston. Fresh nuts for the nutty gardeners.
Ice cream is available but we might not have time as we have
to be back by 6:30 P.M.
Planning a trip is always a challenge especially
when I had to do some of it over the phone. People gave me
directions quite quickly ,thinking that I was familiar with
Guelph. Different sets of people gave me different ways of
arriving at our desinations. Karen Foster and I had to sort
out all of this. She was able to follow my charts and maps
from Mapquest. I was so pleased to have her with me to record
time, mileage and discuss directions as I found out that she
was familiar with parts of our route. Did I ask the right
person or what! Thanks so much, Karen. It certainly made the
trip easier and fun even though we almost froze to death!
It was a full day as I left home at 8:30 A.M. and returned
after 7 P.M.
