Monthly Competitions - 2008

February 2008

  1. Design Section
    1. On the Hill Top - A-Line design - some artificial material allowed. (See Publ. #34)
    2. At the Drinking Hole - a winter water design
  2. Specimen Section
    1. Any variety bulb forced by the exhibitor for indoor enjoyment
    2. Mixed Planter with a minimum of 3 varieties of plants
  3. Photo Section
    1. A Craft Article with a floral theme - any medium allowed. e.g. wood, metal, stitchery etc.

March 2008

  1. Design Section
    1. 'Touch of the Irish' - a Monochromatic colour harmony design
    2. 'Easter Bunny' - a table design in a basket
  2. Specimen Section
    1. Potted Fern - any variety
    2. African Violet - either single or double bloom, single crown
  3. Photo Section
    1. Where is Spring? A photo of some aspect of nature to depict this theme. Photo must have been taken by the exhibitor.

Apil 2008

  1. Design Section
    1. 'Passover' - a design of your choice which might include accessories
    2. 'Pick Three' - a design using Triadic Colour Hormony. (See page 107)
  2. Specimen Section
    1. A Forced Branch - not more than 24"
    2. A bloom from the garden - one stem of a spring bloom, herbaceous perennial / bulb / rhizome

May 2008

  1. Design Section
    1. 'Mothers Day' - a design of choice that conveys this theme
    2. 'In Victoria's Day' - Miniature design, (5") in any dimension including the container, base and accessories
  2. Specimen Section
    1. Tulip - one stem, any variety
    2. Narcissus - one stem, any variety
  3. Horticultural Section
    1. One bloom - any medium depicting this theme, e.g. oil, watercolor, photo, stitchery, woodcarving.

June 2008

  1. Design Section
    1. 'Gemini' - a design using two containers
    2. 'Summers Here' - an under water design (see Page 107)
  2. Specimen Section
    1. Rose - one bloom with foliage
    2. Annual Collection - 4 or more varieties of annuals in a vase
    3. Largest peony bloom - may be exhibited on the stem or floating in water

July 2008 Annual Bus Trip - no meeting scheduled

August 2008

a reminder that the Annual Flower and Vegetable Show is scheduled for September 6th which does NOT conflict with our monthly competition - members have the opportunity to enter this month's competition AND to prepare their most prized plants for submission in the show.

  1. Design Section
    1. 'Canada Day' - design of choice using only Red and White
    2. 'Green with Envy' - a foliage desig - flowers and / or fruits may be present but must be inconspicuous
  2. Specimen Section
    1. Petunias - 3 sprays, same variety (single or double)
    2. Cactus Garden - minimum of 5 varieties
    3. Perennial Collection - 5 or more varieties of perennials

September 2008

Please remember that the society needs your full support for its Caledonia Fair exhibit

  1. Design Section
    1. 'Fall is Here' - a one-sided design for use on a hall table keeping the theme in mind!
    2. 'Indian Summer Please' - an arrangement using corn in a suitable container to depict the theme
  2. Specimen Section
    1. Dahlia - one bloom, any variety
    2. Tomato - three speciments, one variety
    3. Pepper - three specimens, one variety

October 2008

  1. Design Section
    1. 'Harvest Time' - in a cornucopia, a design of choice using fruits and vegetables of the harvest
    2. 'No water still wonderful' - a hanging design using roadside flowers, seeds, foliage, etc.t
  2. Specimen Section
    1. Chrysanthemum - one spray, not over 12" in length
    2. Snapdragon - one spike, any colour, any variety
    3. Any other perennial - one stem, stalk, or spray, named
    4. Dahlia - three blooms, any variety

November 2008

  1. Design Section
    1. 'Calm before the storm' - a design in the Oriental manner
    2. 'Christmas Party' - a table centre piece using fresh flowers and evergreens. Candles are allowed
  2. Specimen Section
    1. The last bloom of the season - annual or perennial
    2. Potted Christmas cactus - may have more than one variety in the pot
  3. Photo Section
    1. Summers look back Grouping of three favorite photos from the summer. The exhibitor must have taken the photo

December 2008 - no meeting

January 2009

  1. Design Section
    1. 'Cold as Ice' - a floral design of your choice highlighting white and blue
    2. 'Over the hills we go' - a landscape design using only artificial and/or contrived materials
  2. Specimen Section
    1. An Amaryllis bulb in bloom - plant to have been in the care of the exhibitor for at least three months.
  3. Photo Section
    1. Winter's here - a photograph of a snow or ice feature from your garden. The exhibitor must have taken the photo

February 2009

  1. Design Section
    1. 'Stone Angel' - a line design set in a dish of stones
    2. 'Hot lips' - a monochromatic design using red or pink flowers
  2. Specimen Section
    1. A forced branch - not to exceed 24" in length, showing developed leaf or flower buds.
  3. Craft Section
    1. Any article crafted by the exhibitor and related to a garden activity or theme. Wide-open class; eg. wood, metal, stitchery, etc.
