Here comes OUR Judge!

Dawn Suter -

Dawn Sutter is an accredited Garden Clubs of Ontario judge of floral design and horticulture, a registered North American Lily Society judge of lilies, and, judges both horticulture and design at the Canada Blooms Show in Toronto. She has also judged in Portland, Washington, St. Louis, Minneapolis, Edmonton, Winnipeg and, this July, she will be judging in Victoria. B.C. -

- tough job, but you know the saying "somebody...."

One thing Dawn really enjoys is judging at local Caledonia, Dunnville and Smithville Fairs, as well as local horticultural society flower shows.

- Dawn is also somewhat of a celebrity -

One of the many highlights of Dawns career was being selected in 2005 to represent Canada at the Triennial World Association of Floral Design Show - held in "Japan"! The design entitled "Essence of Canada" was later selected as one of two chosen from 600 designs at the show to be included in the Encyclopaedia of Floral Designed published in England in 2006.

Tips for exhibiting

SPECIMENS - bring only the best that you have and groom it carefully. Both pot and plant. It may not be perfect but if it is the best you have, chances are, it's as good as any other competitor.

DESIGN - take note of the interpretive element of the competition. The title should get you thinking. There can be more than one interpretation. Go with the one that excites you. Pay attention to the principles and elements of design but don't be afraid to put your own twist on these. Floral design is an art! And, artists like to push the boundaries.

Because we are all at different stages of expertise, there will naturally be a wide range of accomplishment on our show tables. Don't be discouraged if the red ribbons have been evading you. Compete against yourself. Is your work better than it was a year ago? If it is, then that's progress! Congratulate yourself! And, don't be afraid to ask those first place winners for some tips. They will be glad to share. And, if you are a regular exhibitor add a feather to your cap. It means you are a valuable contributing member to the success of our Society.
